不少人打算去印第安纳州旅游的时候，也许会想在当地租车自己开，终归这样会相对灵活方便。然而，此时问题来了：
印第安纳州可以用 中国驾照原件 + 中国驾照翻译公证件 租车和开车。

Residents with an Out-of-Country License
An out-of-country driver's license cannot be used for identification purposes. Out-of-country driver's license must be in English or presented with a verifiably accurate English translation of the document.
If you have an out-of-country driver's license and intend to become an Indiana resident and also wish to obtain an Indiana driver’s license, you must provide an English translation of your driver’s license or your International Driving Permit. You must also pass the vision screening, written knowledge examination and driving skills examination to obtain an Indiana driver's license.
多年前，联合国出台了《联合国陆路交通国际条约》（CONVENTION ON ROAD TRAFFIC）规定凡是签约加入该条约的国家，其公民已考取到本国驾照的，就可凭本国驾照，再申请国际驾照International Driving Permit（简称IDP）。它其实只是一份许可和翻译文件，不需像驾照那样需考试才可获取，但一定要搭配该国驾照一同使用才有效。由于历史原因，中国大陆并未加入《联合国道路公约》，造成今天大陆居民没法办理"国际驾照(IDP)"。
然而除了"国际驾照IDP"外，各个国家和地区也支持使用别的翻译认证方式搭配中国驾照在当地使用，中国驾照翻译公证件 就是在这个基础上推出的。
"中国驾照翻译公证件"必须与驾驶员所持的本国驾照同时使用，才具有法律效应。"中国驾照翻译公证件" 是一份能让警员直接阅读并核实驾驶员开车资历 和 其可驾驶车辆类型的文件。这份驾照翻译公证件上需要有司法翻译员的签字和资历盖章，也必须带有当地美国地保公证员(Notary)的签字和盖章，让翻译件产生一定法律效益和可溯查性。驾驶员开车时候需要带上中国驾照原件和中国驾照翻译公证件。如被警察拦下，需要出示这两材料。
